Suvannamaccha, whose name means golden fish, is a daughter of the demon king Ravana who appears in the Thai and other Southeast Asian versions of the Ramayana story. Cast as a mermaid princess sent to spoil Hanuman's plan to build a causeway to Ravana's stronghold of Lanka, she falls in love with the monkey general instead, and the two go on to have a son together, Macchanu. Suvannamaccha remains a popular figure in Thai folklore today, her image kept in homes and shops as a luck-bringing charm.
