Melanesian Deities
Degei Serpent and Egg

Degei, also rendered Ndengei, is the supreme god of Fijian mythology, worshipped in serpent form. Tradition holds that he created the Fijian world, its fruits and its people by hatching an egg, and that when he shakes himself the resulting rain fertilizes the land, while his wrath can bring floods or ruined crops; he is said to dwell in a cave near Mount Uluda in the Nakauvandra Range and to judge the souls of the dead.
