Home›Deities›Worshipped InBrowse ByWorshipped InThis page groups deities by the religion whose adherents actively worship them, connecting a god to the living or historical community that maintains their cult. Wikipedia defines cult, in the religious sense, as "the care (Latin: cultus) owed to deities or saints and their temples, shrines, or churches." Browsing this way lets a visitor see every deity that belongs to one religion's worship, rather than reading about gods religion by religion.FactsLearn MoreWorshipped InConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedA being held to be divine and, in most traditions, to govern some domain of nature, society or the inner life. The category admits the gods of polytheistic pantheons, deified ancestors and culture heroes, and the high gods of monotheisms where they are treated comparatively. Where a tradition draws the line between a god and an exalted human is itself part of what the entries record. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedA standard analytic category in the comparative study of religion, but not a native category of every tradition it is applied to: several have no word that maps onto it, and monotheisms reclassify the gods of others as beings of a different order rather than as rival deities. 1Learn MoreWhat a Deity Is A deity is a being held to be divine: to possess power beyond the human and, in most traditions, to govern some domain of nature, society or the inner life. The category gathers the gods and goddesses of the world's religions and mythologies, from the great pantheons of Greece, Rome, Egypt, India, Mesopotamia and Scandinavia to the local, household and ancestral deities of many peoples. What counts as a deity varies. Polytheistic traditions recognise many, often organised into families and hierarchies; monotheistic traditions recognise one and reclassify the gods of others as figures of a different order; and some traditions blur the line between a high god, a deified ancestor and a powerful spirit.Pantheons and their shape Across traditions the gods tend to fall into recognisable roles (a sky-father, an earth or mother goddess, a storm or war god, a trickster, a god of the dead, a divine smith), and comparative study has long noted these recurrences without agreeing on why they occur. Each pantheon also has its own internal logic: succession myths, marriages and rivalries, and a division of the cosmos among its members. The atlas records for each deity the tradition, the domains governed, the principal myths, and the associated symbols, animals, plants and planets. A single deity may appear under several names as a cult spread, and gods were often identified with one another across cultures, a process the Romans called interpretatio, the entries note these identifications where they are attested. How the Deities Are Grouped Because the category is large, the entries group by tradition (Greek, Norse, Hindu, Egyptian, Yoruba, Aztec, Celtic and many more), so a browser can narrow from all deities to one pantheon in a step. Some figures are dual-modelled, worshipped as gods in one setting and remembered as human founders or teachers in another; these carry a page here and also among the characters or historical figures, kept complementary so each view is represented.Worshipped InFilter Results71 entriesAdherents Today MaximumAll5,000,000 (2)14,800,000 (1)17,000,000 (1)324,000,000 (1)1,200,000,000 (1)2,000,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Adherents Today MinimumAll4,000,000 (1)5,000,000 (1)14,800,000 (1)17,000,000 (1)324,000,000 (1)1,200,000,000 (1)2,000,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Basis of the Membership FigureAllChurch-Reported Rolls (5)Independent Survey (7)National Census (4)Scholarly or Demographic Estimate (8)Era of Decline End YearAll1180 BCE (1)600 BCE (1)100 (1)400 (2)500 (1)529 (1)550 (1)600 (1)700 (1)1200 (1)1413 (1)1572 (1)1600 (2)1976 (1)Era of Decline Start YearAll1200 BCE (2)100 BCE (2)300 (3)380 (3)1000 (1)1150 (1)1387 (1)1521 (1)1533 (1)1966 (1)Era of Modern Revival End YearAll1471 (1)1992 (1)2000 (1)2013 (1)Era of Modern Revival Start YearAll1463 (1)1911 (1)1990 (2)Establishment StatusAllConfessionalist (1)Declared Not Established (1)Disestablished (1)No Establishment (1)Varies by Province (4)How the Expectation Is EnforcedAllCodified Obligation With Consequences (3)Customary Norm (5)Obligation to Support, No Set Rate (1)Preached Expectation, Not Enforced (1)Membership Figure As OfAll1949-01-01 (1)1969-12-31 (1)2001-01-01 (1)2003-01-01 (1)2006-01-01 (2)2010-01-01 (6)2011-01-01 (1)2011-01-27 (1)2011-12-19 (1)2012-12-18 (2)2013-01-01 (1)2016-01-01 (1)2016-12-31 (1)2017-01-01 (1)2018-01-01 (1)2019-01-01 (1)2020-01-01 (5)2021-01-01 (1)2021-05-12 (1)2021-12-31 (1)2022-01-01 (2)2025-01-01 (2)2026-08-13 (1)2026-08-14 (1)Origin Period End YearAll3000 BCE (2)1650 BCE (1)1200 BCE (2)1046 BCE (1)1000 BCE (1)700 BCE (2)500 BCE (2)400 BCE (3)100 BCE (1)50 (1)106 (1)200 (1)273 (1)300 (2)396 (1)632 (1)712 (1)800 (1)1043 (1)1200 (1)1300 (1)1387 (1)1428 (1)1438 (1)1500 (1)1800 (1)1850 (1)1863 (1)1900 (1)1940 (1)Origin Period Start YearAll-50,000 (1)3500 BCE (1)3300 BCE (1)2300 BCE (1)2000 BCE (2)1750 BCE (1)1600 BCE (1)1500 BCE (1)1400 BCE (1)1200 BCE (1)1000 BCE (1)800 BCE (1)750 BCE (1)700 BCE (1)600 BCE (2)586 BCE (1)550 BCE (2)500 BCE (3)400 BCE (1)300 BCE (1)1 (2)30 (1)32 (1)100 (1)500 (2)610 (1)1017 (1)1325 (1)1400 (2)1500 (1)1700 (1)1800 (1)1830 (1)1844 (1)1900 (1)Position on MarriageAllMarriage is held to be monogamous, with remarriage after divorce sanctioned under specified conditions (1)Marriage may licitly be polygynous (1)Position on SexualityAllSame-sex orientation or practice is held to bar full membership or participation (1)Same-sex sexual relationships are held contrary to teaching; LGBT individuals are welcomed as members but not ordained, and same-sex unions are not blessed (1)The body holds no single settled position; the question is actively and openly contested within it (3)Position on UsuryAllInterest is permitted but bound by ethical constraints against exploiting the poor (1)Interest of any kind on a loan is forbidden (1)Practice StatusAllClosed ceremonial knowledge, described but not reproduced (3)Discontinued as a state religion (11)Held within an initiatory society (1)Living, and practised in varied local forms (7)Partly restricted: some elements are closed to outsiders (9)Standard Rate ExpectedAllNineteen percent.
