Nichiren Shu, meaning School of Nichiren, is a Japanese Buddhist school formed from a combination of several of the original schools descended from the medieval teacher Nichiren, plus part of a fifth. Its adherents hold that Nichiren did not designate a single successor but instead named six senior disciples of equal rank to lead after him: Nissho, Nichiro, Nikko, Mimbu Niko, Nitcho and Nichiji. The school's headquarters is Kuon-ji Temple on Mount Minobu in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, and as of 2010 it counted about 3.8 million members worldwide across roughly 5,000 temples with 8,000 ministers, with a presence extending to the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, South America, India, Korea, Southeast Asia and Europe.
