Ordination Practice

This page groups denominations by how they recognize a member as a minister. Wikipedia notes that Jehovah's Witnesses "consider an adherent's qualified baptism to constitute his ordination as a minister," a markedly different practice from a seminary-trained clergy. Browsing this way lets a visitor compare how differently denominations of the same religion set someone apart for ministry.

Overview
What Defines This Grouping
The movements of modern Judaism, which differ over the binding authority of halakhah, the place of critical scholarship and the accommodation of modern life, together with the older streams they grew out of. All are continuous with rabbinic Judaism and its texts. 2
Attestation
Era of Attestation
Denominational division in Judaism is modern: the movements took shape in nineteenth-century central Europe in response to emancipation. The older streams grouped here, Karaite and Hasidic, are divisions of a different kind. 2

The movements of Judaism

This group gathers the main movements of Judaism, particularly as they developed in the modern period in response to emancipation and modernity. Judaism is both a religion and a people, and its denominations differ mainly over the authority and interpretation of Jewish law (halakha).

The browser will find Orthodox Judaism (including its Haredi and Modern Orthodox forms and the Hasidic movements), Conservative (Masorti) Judaism, Reform Judaism, and smaller and older streams. The atlas describes each movement's stance on law, tradition and change without privileging any as normative.
