Home›Denominations›Founded ByBrowse ByFounded ByThis page groups denominations by the person credited with founding them. Wikipedia notes that the "Jehovah's Witnesses, founded in the late 1870s by Charles Taze Russell," trace directly to one named founder. Browsing by founder lets a visitor trace a denomination back to the individual who broke away and started it.FactsLearn MoreFounded BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedBranches, schools and movements within a parent tradition and grouped under it: churches and confessions, schools of law and of philosophy, ordination lineages and reform movements. What counts as a branch is a distinction the parent tradition makes, not one cross-religious rule. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedContested: denomination is a term of art from English-speaking Protestantism. It maps poorly onto a Hindu sampradaya, an Islamic madhhab, a Buddhist vehicle or a Taoist ordination lineage, none of which is a separate church. 2OriginsOrigin of the NameWell-attestedFrom Latin denominatio, a naming. The word entered religious use among English-speaking Protestants for bodies that recognise one another as legitimately named parts of one church; its export to other religions is an analogy. 2Learn MoreBranches within a tradition A denomination is a distinct branch, school or movement within a larger religious tradition: the churches and confessions of Christianity, the schools of Buddhism, the schools of law and theology in Islam, the movements of Judaism, and the sampradayas and movements of Hinduism. The category also holds the divisions of smaller and newer traditions. Each entry records the parent tradition, what distinguishes the branch in belief, practice or authority, and, where known, when and how it emerged: often through reform, schism, revival or the following of a particular teacher.Reading the Divisions Divisions within a religion arise for many reasons (disputes over doctrine, authority, ritual, or the interpretation of scripture, and sometimes ethnic, political or regional difference as much as theology), and the entries describe the grounds of each without taking a side in it. What one tradition calls a school, another calls a sect or a movement, and the terminology itself can carry judgement; the atlas uses neutral description. The denominations group under their parent religion, so a browser can move from a tradition to its internal branches (the denominations of Christianity, of Buddhism, of Islam), in a single step.Founded ByFilter Results37 entriesGenderAllFemale (8)Male (28)HistoricityAllHistorically attested (32)Historicity debated (3)Legendary: known from narrative tradition, not the historical record (1)Lifespan or Floruit End YearAll156 (1)597 (1)707 (1)1167 (1)1170 (1)1200 (1)1205 (1)1210 (1)1282 (1)1547 (1)1691 (1)1784 (1)1810 (1)1831 (1)1856 (1)1906 (1)1910 (1)1915 (1)1931 (1)1948 (2)1951 (2)1960 (1)1961 (1)1964 (1)1975 (1)1985 (1)1988 (1)1997 (1)1999 (1)2019 (1)Lifespan or Floruit Start YearAll34 (1)538 (1)634 (1)1100 (1)1105 (1)1113 (1)1158 (1)1173 (1)1222 (1)1491 (1)1624 (1)1736 (1)1760 (1)1772 (1)1813 (1)1821 (1)1827 (1)1844 (1)1845 (1)1854 (1)1865 (1)1866 (1)1884 (1)1885 (1)1887 (2)1893 (1)1897 (1)1906 (1)1917 (1)1926 (1)1930 (1)1940 (1)1946 (2)1951 (1)Manner of DeathAllAssassinated (1)Died of natural causes (10)Traditions Revering This FigureAllBuddhism (2)Christianity (6)Feri Tradition (Wiccan-derived) (1)Hinduism (2)Islam (2)Judaism (1)Modern Satanism (LaVeyan) (1)Taoism (2)Wicca (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareAlex SandersFounded By1 entryAnn LeeFounded By1 entryAnton LaVeyFounded By1 entryBasavaFounded By1 entryCharles FillmoreFounded By1 entryCharles Harrison MasonFounded By1 entryElijah MuhammadFounded By1 entryEllen G.
