Home›Denominations›Originated In›CaliforniaRegionCaliforniaThe Americas and the CaribbeanDocumented History and SocietyVerifiedCalifornia is the state on the Pacific Coast of the Western United States, bordering Oregon, Nevada and Arizona and sharing an international border with the Mexican state of Baja California. The source describes it as one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas of pre-Columbian North America, colonized by the Spanish Empire, part of Mexico from 1821 and ceded to the United States in 1848, with the gold rush starting that year and statehood coming in 1850. Movements, communities and sacred places are placed here when they arose in the state, whichever period they belong to.CaliforniaConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)CaliforniaFilter Results6 entriesFounded ByAllAnton LaVey (1)Starhawk (1)Victor Henry Anderson (1)Zsuzsanna Budapest (1)Church FamilyAllPentecostal (2)Origin EraAll1901 (1)1913 (1)1940 (1)1966 (1)1971 (1)1979 (1)Establishment StatusAllNo Establishment (1)Varies by Province (1)Adherents BandAllno count exists by the organization's own deliberate policy (1)no count isolating this tradition exists (2)Parent ReligionAllChristianity (2)Modern Satanism (1)Wicca (3)Liturgical LanguageAllThe vernacular (6)Sexuality PositionAllSame-sex marriage is performed and LGBT clergy are ordained on equal terms with heterosexual clergy (1)Same-sex orientation or practice is held to bar full membership or participation (1)PolityAllA single central governing body over the whole movement (1)Autonomous covens, authority conferred by initiation (2)Business decided by the gathered meeting seeking unity, without clergy (1)Congregational: each congregation self-governing (2)No central authority (3)Practice StatusAllLiving tradition, practised today (6)Ordination PracticeAllAuthority conferred by initiation rather than by ordination (3)Conferred by a teacher's certification of learning (1)No ordination; authority rests on learning or on the whole body (1)Open to women and men (3)Restricted to men (2)Restricted to women (1)Varies between provinces or member bodies (1)Parent DenominationAllProtestantism (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 6Church of SatanCaliforniaDianic WiccaCaliforniaFeri TraditionCaliforniaOneness PentecostalismCaliforniaPentecostalismCaliforniaReclaimingCaliforniaConnectionsContained InUnited States, Regions Well-attested Source California (Wikipedia)Modern AreaUnited States, Countries Well-attested Source GeoNames: GeoNames search results for CaliforniaOriginated HereChurch of Satan, Denominations Well-attested Source Satanism: A Social HistoryMassimo Introvignetier 1Dianic Wicca, Denominations Well-attested Source Her Hidden Children: The Rise of Wicca and Paganism in AmericaChas S.
