Wikipedia quotes Dom Bernardo Cignitti's account that "the mortal remains of the deceased are associated in some manner with the holiness of their souls which await reunion with their bodies in the resurrection." Browsing by tradition lets a visitor see the specific belief that gives an object its meaning.FactsLearn MoreTraditionSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsDirectoryCategoryWell-attestedSacred Objects & Ritual Items 1Learn MoreBeads Counted by Hand, Arrived at More Than Once A string of beads, moved one at a time through the fingers while a fixed prayer or a sacred name is repeated, is not one tradition's invention passed to the rest. It is a counting technology several traditions reached for independently, or adapted along the trade and pilgrimage routes that carried more than goods. The Hindu and Buddhist japamala, most often strung to a hundred and eight beads, counts repetitions of a mantra and is attested across South and East Asia for well over a thousand years, carried into Japan and China as the juzu and the nianzhu. The Islamic misbaha counts the ninety nine names of God recited after prayer. The Christian rosary, whose fixed form is traditionally associated with the Dominican Order, formalized a much older practice of counting repeated prayers on a knotted cord that the Desert Fathers of Egypt had already kept centuries earlier. None of the three theologies of what the repeated words accomplish resembles the others closely, yet all three settled on the same physical answer to the same practical problem, keeping count of a repetition too long to track by memory alone. That convergence, on beads specifically rather than on notches, knots or tally marks generally, is itself part of what the study of material and lived religion treats as worth explaining, since a technology this simple had more available solutions than the traditions that use it actually chose between.TraditionFilter Results7 entriesAdherents Today MaximumAll5,000,000 (1)14,800,000 (1)324,000,000 (1)1,200,000,000 (1)2,000,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Adherents Today MinimumAll4,000,000 (1)14,800,000 (1)324,000,000 (1)1,200,000,000 (1)2,000,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Basis of the Membership FigureAllIndependent Survey (5)National Census (1)Scholarly or Demographic Estimate (5)Establishment StatusAllDeclared Not Established (1)Varies by Province (4)How the Expectation Is EnforcedAllCodified Obligation With Consequences (1)Customary Norm (3)Obligation to Support, No Set Rate (1)Membership Figure As OfAll2001-01-01 (1)2010-01-01 (4)2011-01-01 (1)2011-01-27 (1)2011-12-19 (1)2012-12-18 (2)2013-01-01 (1)2020-01-01 (5)2021-01-01 (1)Origin Period End YearAll500 BCE (1)400 BCE (3)50 (1)632 (1)1100 (1)Origin Period Start YearAll1500 BCE (1)600 BCE (1)586 BCE (1)500 BCE (1)30 (1)610 (1)1000 (1)Position on MarriageAllMarriage may licitly be polygynous (1)Position on SexualityAllSame-sex orientation or practice is held to bar full membership or participation (1)The body holds no single settled position; the question is actively and openly contested within it (2)Position on UsuryAllInterest is permitted but bound by ethical constraints against exploiting the poor (1)Interest of any kind on a loan is forbidden (1)Practice StatusAllLiving, and practised in varied local forms (3)Partly restricted: some elements are closed to outsiders (4)Standard Rate ExpectedAllTen percent.
