A khutbah is the primary formal occasion for public preaching in Islamic tradition, delivered by a khatib. It is prescribed across the legal schools and occurs most regularly at the Friday congregational prayer, as well as on the festival days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, after prayers for solar and lunar eclipses, and following prayers for rain.
