Niyyah is the intention formed in the heart to perform an act for the sake of God, and Islamic teaching holds that deeds are judged, and rewarded, according to the intention behind them rather than the act alone. It is required before salah, the ritual prayer, though most scholars hold that this intention need not be spoken aloud since there is no record of it being voiced by Muhammad or his companions. Niyyah is likewise required to begin the pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj.
