Mut'ah of Hajj

Devotional Practices

The mutah of Hajj, also called hajj al-tamattu, is the relaxation of the ihram, the pilgrim sacred consecrated state, between completing the Umrah and beginning the Hajj, lifting its dress code and other prohibitions for the interval between the two rites. The allowance was instituted by Muhammad as a departure from pre-Islamic Arabian practice, giving pilgrims relief from the restrictions of ihram before it is resumed for the Hajj itself.
