Raf al-Yadayn, literally the raising of the hands, is a practice attributed to Muhammad in which the hands are lifted during the ruku, the bowing portion of salah. It is documented extensively across the hadith collections, and Islamic legal schools differ on exactly when the hands should be raised during prayer, ranging from the more restrictive Hanafi position to the fuller practice followed by the Ahl al-Hadith and Salafi traditions.
