Rak'a

Devotional Practices

A raka is a single unit of prescribed movements and recitations performed as part of the obligatory Islamic prayer, salah. It begins with the takbir spoken while standing and recitation of the opening chapter of the Quran, continues into ruku, a bow at roughly ninety degrees while praising God, and then sujud, full prostration with the forehead and nose touching the ground, before a seated position is resumed. The five daily prayers are built from different numbers of these units, ranging from two at the dawn prayer to four at the midday, afternoon and night prayers.
