Chaand Raat, literally night of the moon, is a South Asian cultural observance held on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, when the first crescent of the month of Shawwal is sighted. Families gather in public places to look for the new moon, exchange greetings once it appears, and spend the night shopping for clothing, jewelry and gifts, applying henna, and visiting markets that stay open late, with festivities continuing until the pre-dawn prayer. Its place in South Asian Muslim social life has been compared to that of Christmas Eve.
