Friday prayer

Devotional Practices

Friday prayer is the congregational midday prayer Muslims perform every Friday in place of the ordinary Zuhr prayer. The day itself is treated as a time of communal gathering at the mosque; attendance is obligatory for adult Muslim men, while women and children may take part without falling under the same requirement. The service combines ritual washing, the call to prayer and its shorter counterpart, a sermon delivered by an imam, and two units of congregational prayer performed standing, bowing, and prostrating together.
