Home›Devotional Rituals›Hindu Murti Veneration RitesGroupHindu Murti Veneration RitesHindu Murti Veneration Rites groups devotional practices in which liquid, light, or ritual substances are offered directly onto a murti, the consecrated image through which a deity is worshipped in Hindu temple and home practice. Arti waves a lit flame, fed by camphor or ghee, in a circular clockwise motion before the image while devotional hymns are sung, usually marking the culmination of a longer act of puja. Abhisheka pours milk, water, honey, or other liquids over an image or linga as an act of ritual bathing and honor, a practice shared with Jain and Buddhist image worship as well as Hindu. Kumbhabhishekam is the temple-scale form of the same act, performed to consecrate or reconsecrate a temple and its enshrined images after construction or renovation, sanctifying the site itself rather than a single image. Prana pratishtha is the rite that first installs the deity's living presence into a newly made murti, following steps set out in Vedic scripture, without which the image remains an unconsecrated object rather than a vessel for worship.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonCultural OriginWell-attestedVedic / Indian 1Browse ByAll Hindu Murti Veneration RitesHindu Murti Veneration Rites4 entriesHindu Murti Veneration RitesFilter Results4 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll100 (1)500 (1)600 (1)FrequencyAllAs the occasion requires (3)Daily (1)ObligationAllObligatory on those who meet its conditions (2)Optional and voluntary (1)Recommended and meritorious, not required (1)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (4)Social FormAllPerformed alone or together (1)Performed by a gathered group (2)Performed by an officiant for a recipient (1)Practice StatusAllLiving tradition, practised today (4)PractitionerAllAll adherents of the tradition (1)Clergy or ordained officiants (1)Trained or authorised specialists (2)Native To RegionAllIndian Subcontinent (3)Holds ElementAllFire (1)Originated InAllIndian Subcontinent (3)Originates In LanguageAllSanskrit (1)Kind of ritualAllHindu Murti Veneration Rites (4)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 4AartiDevotional Rituals6 linksAbhishekaDevotional Rituals8 linksKumbhabhishekamDevotional Rituals5 linksPrana PratishthaDevotional Rituals8 linksSources1.
