Disputed Statements

Claims this atlas currently marks as unsettled or as tested and found false. A debated fact is one scholars hold competing positions on; a debunked one has been checked against the record and found not to hold. Both are kept in view rather than quietly smoothed over, with the reasoning that put each one where it stands.

3,862 statements.

The book has long circulated under the name of Maslama al-Majriti, the Andalusi mathematician and astronomer who died in the early eleventh century. That ascription has been challenged in favour of Maslama ibn Qasim al-Qurtubi, a different Andalusi scholar of overlapping name and period with a documented interest in the occult sciences, and recent editors have followed the second identification. The atlas records the attribution as it circulates and treats neither as settled.

Currently States The words spirit animal and totem are used in popular Western practice for a personal animal ally. Native scholars and communities object to both usages, on the ground that they take the vocabulary and the authority of particular Indigenous traditions and apply them to a generic and commercial practice.

Suzanne Owen's The Appropriation of Native American Spirituality (Continuum, 2008) documents the objection Indigenous communities in North America raise, ongoing and in the present tense, against the commercial "spirit animal" genre. Owen's study examines how the practice borrows specific Indigenous terms and claimed lineages, presenting them as licensing a service sold to outside customers, and sets that use against the communities' own accounts of what those terms and practices mean within their traditions. What is disputed, on Owen's reading, is not that people generally feel a kinship with animals, a widely attested feeling that belongs to no one tradition, but the specific commercial borrowing of Indigenous vocabulary and claimed authority. The atlas records the animal, records that the modern commercial practice exists, and records that this documented objection is made, without adjudicating between the parties.

The Piprahwa Project (piprahwa.com, 2023), maintained by Chris Peppe, great-grandson of the site's original 1898 excavator William Claxton Peppe, examines the Brahmi script of the reliquary inscription against comparative epigraphic charts spanning the Mauryan, Ashokan, period and the centuries after it. Because Brahmi letterforms changed gradually and unevenly across regions in this period, palaeographers reading the same inscription have placed it anywhere from before Ashoka's third century BCE reign to some generations after it, and the project's own account reports that range rather than resolving it. The dispute became public in 2023 when Sotheby's proposed auctioning part of the find, prompting the family's own research site to set out the epigraphic case for an early date.

Chris Peppe and colleagues' The Piprahwa Project (2023), examining the 1898 excavation of the Piprahwa stupa by his ancestor William Claxton Peppe, revisits the Brahmi inscription on the relic casket attributing the enshrined bone relics to the Buddha's own clan, the Shakyas. The Project's method combines re-examination of the original excavation records with renewed epigraphic analysis of the inscription's grammar, and finds the grammatical reading and the resulting attribution of the relics specifically to the historical Buddha Gautama himself has been contested by specialists since the inscription was first published in 1898.

According To Roman Catholicism

Michael Phayer's The Catholic Church and the Holocaust, 1930 to 1965 (Indiana University Press, 2000) examines the documented papal commission and draft encyclical, Humani Generis Unitas, prepared under Pope Pius XI shortly before his 1939 death. Phayer's method is archival, working from the surviving drafts and commission records, and he finds scholars disagree over whether the text as drafted would have amounted to a clear condemnation of antisemitism, since parts of it restate older theological hostility to Judaism alongside its rejection of racial theory, and over why Pius XI's successor, Pius XII, did not publish it after his death.

Poland has no established church, but the Catholic Church retains substantial institutional and political influence reflecting the country's overwhelmingly Catholic population and the church's historical role opposing Communist rule before 1989. In October 2020, Poland's Constitutional Tribunal, a body whose own judicial independence has been separately disputed since 2015 amid changes to its composition made by the then-governing party, ruled that abortion in cases of severe and irreversible fetal abnormality was unconstitutional, banning what had been the most commonly used legal ground for abortion and prompting large nationwide protests. The extent of the Catholic Church's direct role in that ruling is debated, since the Tribunal acted formally as a state constitutional body, but the ruling is widely attributed at least partly to Church advocacy given the church's long-standing public opposition to abortion on the same grounds. Because the Tribunal's own independence is separately contested in Polish politics, disentangling the ruling's religious motivation from its political context is not something the ruling's text alone can settle.

Hans Bender led the 1967 investigation of the Rosenheim disturbances, a well-documented case of unexplained electrical and physical disturbances in a law office, working alongside Max Planck Institute physicists Friedbert Karger and Gerhard Zicha, who examined the building's wiring for a conventional cause. The case sits in a research tradition named recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis, a term William Roll and J. Gaither Pratt coined in 1958 during their earlier investigation of the Seaford, Long Island disturbances, distinguishing the pattern from the much older German folk term poltergeist itself. The method is field investigation of a spontaneous case, examining physical evidence and applying instrumented measurement to rule out a conventional electrical fault. Some parapsychologists cite Rosenheim as suggestive because Karger and Zicha's own measurements could not fully explain every disturbance conventionally; critics note the investigation lacked continuous surveillance sufficient to rule out physical involvement by the office employee, Annemarie Schneider, around whom the disturbances centred, throughout the period they occurred, which is why the case remains debated.

According To Islam

The Encyclopaedia of Islam (2005) sets out one camp that reads the justice condition of Quran 4:3 as a practical requirement a man must satisfy and that most can, so the permission to marry up to four wives stands; another camp reads Quran 4:129, which states that a man will not be able to deal equally between wives however much he wishes, as making the justice condition of 4:3 effectively unmeetable, and therefore reads the two verses together as pointing toward monogamy. Both camps argue from the identical two verses, which is why the disagreement among jurists has not closed.
