Disputed Statements

Claims this atlas currently marks as unsettled or as tested and found false. A debated fact is one scholars hold competing positions on; a debunked one has been checked against the record and found not to hold. Both are kept in view rather than quietly smoothed over, with the reasoning that put each one where it stands.

Cao Guojiu, Historicity DetailFabrizio Pregadio's Encyclopedia of Taoism (Routledge, 2008) identifies Cao Guojiu as the latest addition to the Eight Immortals and the least developed of the eight in the surviving literature, presented as a relative of the imperial house of the Song dynasty whose brother abused the family's position and killed a man, driving Cao Guojiu to withdraw from court in shame until the already-established immortals Zhongli Quan and Lu Dongbin find and test him, a late and comparatively thin biography reflecting his position as the most recently incorporated member of the set.

According To Afro-Brazilian

Practitioners and some scholars read the roda as sacred space with Kongo-derived cosmology and links to Afro-Brazilian religion; other scholars describe a martial game whose religious elements are peripheral or modern. Both positions are argued in the ethnographic literature.

Capoeira, Practices

Standing

Concerns Standing as a Comparative Category

Currently States Used, but its validity as a comparative category is disputed

Capoeira is used in the atlas as a comparative example of embodied practice with a claimed religious dimension, but J. Lowell Lewis's 1992 ethnographic study of discourse and deception in Brazilian capoeira, along with subsequent scholarship, questions the category itself: some lineages, capoeira angola above all, maintain explicit content linked to Candomble, invoking orixas and ritual protections around play, while other lineages, capoeira regional foremost among them, present the art in secular sporting terms with little or no such content. Because the religious dimension is lineage-specific rather than a property of capoeira as a whole, treating capoeira as a single comparable unit risks averaging together practices that differ on the very point being compared. The dispute is not over whether any capoeira lineage has religious content, which is not contested, but over whether the term capoeira names one practice for comparative purposes at all. It remains unresolved because the lineages in question have not converged and no scholarly consensus has proposed replacing the single category with separately compared lineages.

Concerns Scholarly Standing Detail

Currently States Whether capoeira's spiritual and Afro-Brazilian religious dimension is continuous tradition or substantially twentieth-century reconstruction is genuinely disputed among scholars

Where capoeira's Candomble-linked content is asserted, principally within capoeira angola, a further and separate question is how old that content actually is. Some practitioners and popular accounts describe the tradition's spiritual dimension as continuous from an enslaved African past reaching back centuries. Lewis's 1992 study argues that a meaningful part of what is presented as ancient religious content is better read as narrative reconstructed during capoeira's twentieth-century revival and professionalisation, when practitioners and folklorists alike had reason to frame the art as older and more authentically African than the documentary record can independently support. The dispute turns on distinguishing genuine unbroken transmission from a later, sincerely held reconstruction dressed in old form, a distinction that oral tradition alone cannot supply and that the surviving documentary record from the relevant period is too thin to settle either way.

According To A Modern Herbal

Etymologists have proposed both an Arabic root, karawiya, and a link to the ancient region of Caria in Asia Minor for the Latin careum, and neither derivation has been shown to be primary over the other; the word may equally preserve an older Mediterranean substrate name now lost.

Concerns How Its Legacy Is Contested

Currently States Whether the benandanti testimony records a genuine surviving agrarian cult is disputed.

Wolfgang Behringer's Witches and Witch-Hunts: A Global History (Polity Press, 2004) situates Carlo Ginzburg's archival study of the Friulian benandanti within the wider historiography of European witch-belief. Ginzburg's method was close analysis of Inquisition trial records from Friuli read against the grain of the inquisitors' own categories. One camp credits Ginzburg with showing that an inquisition file can preserve a real body of popular agrarian belief, night battles fought in spirit for the fertility of the crops, that pre-dates and differs from the demonology the inquisitors later imposed on it. Another accepts the archival work but rejects the wider frame, holding the testimony records a local complex of dream, vision and folk healing rather than a cult with membership and continuity, and that Ginzburg's later, broader comparative claims in Ecstasies rest on resemblances too thin to bear the weight put on them. Both camps agree Ginzburg's benandanti were not the witches the courts across the rest of Europe were hunting.

Currently States Anthropologists compare Carnival functionally to Saturnalia and other calendared reversal festivals of the ancient world, though a direct historical line between them is not established.

Debated among historians of festival culture. One camp (continuity/survival, the older folklorist reading) treats Carnival as a descendant or continuation of pre-Christian calendared reversal festivals such as Roman Saturnalia and Lupercalia. A second camp reads the resemblance as functional and typological only, locating Carnival's actual documented origin inside the medieval Latin Christian liturgical calendar as a licensed period of excess before Lenten fasting, with no demonstrated line of historical descent from antiquity. Encyclopaedia Britannica records the comparison without adjudicating between them.

Ancient authors (Diodorus Siculus, Plutarch) describe child sacrifice at Carthage; modern archaeologists including Stager and Quinn largely concur based on tophet evidence, while others including Moscati and Fantar read the same burials as natural infant deaths. No excavation has settled the dispute.

According To Islamic oneiromancy (attributed to Ibn Sirin)

The reading given here is drawn from Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, the dream-interpretation manual that circulates under the name of the early Islamic scholar Muhammad Ibn Sirin, who died in 728 CE. Comparing the manuscript history against Ibn Sirin's own lifetime, the received compilation is instead ascribed to al-Dari, working around the fifteenth century, more than seven hundred years after Ibn Sirin's death, which is why his authorship is treated as a traditional attribution carried by the text's popularity rather than a historical fact the manuscript record supports. The specific dream-symbol reading is recorded as this manual's content, not as Ibn Sirin's own words.

Catharism, Point in DisputeMalcolm Lambert and Malcolm Barber describe Catharism as a coherent international church, with its own bishoprics, an ordained elite and a shared dualist theology stretching from the Rhineland to Languedoc and northern Italy. Mark Gregory Pegg, reading the Languedoc inquisition registers directly rather than through the Church's polemical accounts of them, argues that this picture of one organised Cathar Church is substantially the inquisitors' own construction: a coherence imposed by the questions they asked on a more local and less doctrinally uniform world of "good men" and "good women" who did not necessarily share a single name for themselves or a single theology.

The Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo, Spain, holds the Sudarium of Oviedo, a bloodstained cloth associated by tradition with the burial of Jesus, and the Arca Santa, a reliquary chest holding further relics. The cathedral's own published institutional account records that radiocarbon testing of the Sudarium produced a date considerably later than proponents of its first-century authenticity had expected, placing the cloth's material within a later historical period on the standard method's own reading. Proponents attribute the discrepancy to contamination of the sample by later handling, incense smoke or other material absorbed over centuries of veneration, a position critics regard as unfalsifiable, since any radiocarbon result inconsistent with the desired date can be attributed to unspecified contamination without independent verification of what contaminated the sample or by how much. The method in dispute is radiocarbon dating and the contamination-correction arguments raised against a specific unwelcome result. Because the contamination claim cannot itself be independently tested, the dating remains debated rather than resolved by either the test or the objection to it.

Some contemporaries said as much directly and historians take the claim seriously. Others hold that the decline in the Holy Roman Empire had several causes running together, including the exhaustion of the Thirty Years War, reform of criminal procedure, the reassertion of higher courts over local ones, and a slow change in what educated people found plausible. A book does not stop a persecution on its own, and no one has isolated its effect.

No first-hand account of Bois Caiman survives; the earliest written record is colonist Antoine Dalmas's in 1814, more than two decades after the event. Fatiman's presence and role rest on this and later retellings rather than contemporary documentation, and scholars including Leon-Francois Hoffmann have argued the ceremony as commonly told may be a later mythologized creation rather than a precise record of what happened that night.

The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church (2005) records that a Roman martyr named Cecilia is attested by her titular church in Rome, but that the Acts of Cecilia, the narrative source for her traditional life, is a fifth or sixth century romance composed centuries after any historical martyrdom, and that nothing in her story, including her association with music, can be traced to a source earlier than that later composition.
