Hugo Grotius, also known as Hugo de Groot, was a Dutch humanist, diplomat, lawyer, theologian, jurist, statesman, poet and playwright, born in Delft on 10 April 1583 and dead on 28 August 1645. A teenage prodigy, he studied at Leiden University and later took part in the controversies over the religious policy of the Dutch Republic, for which he was imprisoned in Loevestein Castle before escaping hidden in a chest of books. He wrote most of his major works in exile in France, among them De jure belli ac pacis and Mare Liberum, and he has been called the father of international law. His contributions to Arminian theology helped provide the seeds for later Arminian-based movements, and in 1617 he wrote the Defensio fidei catholicae de satisfactione Christi, the work from which the governmental theory of the atonement is drawn.
