Jahm ibn Safwan was an Islamic theologian of the Umayyad period whose name gave rise to the Jahmiyya moniker. He was born in Samarkand and settled in Khurasan, specifically at Merv. During his lifetime he attached himself to the rebel leader al-Harith ibn Surayj, a dissident in Khurasan, and he was executed in 745 by Salm ibn Ahwaz. He was the first Muslim reported to have spoken about the createdness of the Quran. Reliable historical information about him is sparse, because it comes from sources antagonistic toward him written in later periods.
