Origen (c. 185 to c. 253 AD) was an early Christian theologian and ascetic born in Alexandria in Roman Egypt, described by later writers as one of the greatest minds the early church produced. He was an extraordinarily prolific author, composing roughly two thousand treatises covering textual criticism of scripture, biblical commentary and spiritual writing, including the Hexapla, an early critical edition of the Hebrew Bible set alongside several Greek translations. He helped develop early Christian thinking about the Trinity and was among the first theologians to treat the Holy Spirit as part of the Godhead, while also teaching that the Father was greater than the Son and the Son greater than the Spirit, a position later ages called subordinationist. He is credited with the earliest fully developed statement of the ransom theory of atonement, the idea that Christ's death paid a ransom to free humanity from Satan, and he speculated, without presenting it as settled doctrine, that all souls might eventually be purified and reconciled to God. He probably died at Tyre, in the Roman province of Phoenice, around 253 AD.
