Yāska

Hindu, Jain & Yogic Teachers

Yāska was an ancient Indian grammarian and Vedic linguist who lived somewhere between the seventh and fifth centuries BCE, before Pāṇini. Tradition identifies him as the author of the Nirukta, the discipline of etymology, meaning the explanation of words, within the Sanskrit grammatical tradition, and of the Nighantu, the oldest proto-thesaurus in India. The Nirukta is counted as one of the six Vedāṅgas, the limbs of the Veda in Hinduism, so his work belongs to the apparatus for reading the Vedic hymns correctly. He is widely regarded as the precursive founder of the discipline that later became etymology in both the East and the West. His century cannot be fixed exactly, and scholars give opinions between the seventh and the fifth century BCE.
