Screen Work

El Teatro del Mas Alla, Chavin de Huantar (Novoa Ruiz, 2015)

Documentaries

A 2015 documentary film on the ceremonial centre of Chavin de Huantar in the Peruvian Andes, directed by Jose Manuel Novoa Ruiz and registered in Spain's own official state film catalogue (ICAA). The catalogue's own synopsis describes the site's theocratic governors and the priests who conducted religious ceremonies there for roughly 800 years, staging what the film calls "the theatre of the beyond" through architecture, sound, lighting effects and hallucinogenic substances to sustain their religious authority over pilgrims who travelled to the site.

Belongs to Tradition

Chavin Religion, Religions

Spain's own official state film catalogue synopsis is substantially about the priesthood and religious ceremony conducted at Chavin de Huantar, and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre's own record independently names the site a religious centre, making this the first screen work the atlas holds for the tradition.
