The gods of the Fang people of Central Africa, a Bantu-speaking population spread across Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and southern Cameroon. Fang religious tradition centers on a Supreme God, Mebege in the tradition recorded for Fang communities in the Central African Republic, alongside an ancestor cult, Bwiti, that mediates between the living and the dead through the founding figures of a lineage. Bwiti initiation, which draws on the psychoactive iboga plant, remains practiced today alongside Fang Christianity rather than as a wholly displaced older layer.
