Almsgiving / offering

This page groups holidays by what adherents actually do to keep them. Wikipedia notes that in ancient Rome "public business was suspended for the performance of religious rites on the feriae." Browsing by observance type lets a visitor compare how differently two holidays are actually kept.

What Defines This Grouping
Days a tradition appoints for celebration, usually commemorating a person or an event and marked by a service and by eating rather than abstaining. The word is a Latin Christian liturgical term for a day of appointed rank in the calendar; extending it to the Islamic eid and to Baha'i holy days is a convenience of this classification, not a term those traditions use. 2

The feasts

This group gathers feasts, the festal days of the religious calendar centred on celebration and, often, shared eating, commemorating a saint, an event of sacred history or a season of the year. In the Christian calendar especially, the feast is a central form of observance.

The browser will find the feasts the atlas gathers. The entries describe each feast's occasion, customs and meaning, noting the tradition and the date on which it falls.
