Mennonite Central Committee

Foundation

Origin from 1920

A worldwide relief, development and peacebuilding ministry of Anabaptist churches, formed on 27 to 28 July 1920 when representatives of several Mennonite Relief Commissions met at Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart, Indiana, to bring famine relief to Mennonites in southern Russia, present-day Ukraine. Headquartered in Akron, Pennsylvania, and jointly operated today by Mennonite Central Committee U.S. and Mennonite Central Committee Canada under a shared covenant, MCC carries out relief, development and peace programs in dozens of countries worldwide, sponsored in the United States by Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish church bodies, and shares God's love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. Institutional Wealth or Finances

About 62.7 million Canadian dollars in total revenue against about 52.6 million Canadian dollars in program and grant spending, with about 50.1 million Canadian dollars held in reserve funds, for Mennonite Central Committee Canada's fiscal year ended 31 March 2025, per Charity Intelligence Canada's review of the charity's own public filings. This covers MCC's Canadian body only; MCC's US body reports separately and publishes no comparable consolidated figure (see disclosure regime). 2

Financial Disclosure Regime

Mennonite Central Committee operates through separately incorporated national bodies. MCC Canada is a registered Canadian charity whose financial filings with the Canada Revenue Agency are public and are reviewed by third parties such as Charity Intelligence Canada. MCC US, by contrast, is recognized by the US Internal Revenue Service as a church and is not required to file the Form 990 return most other tax exempt organizations file; ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer database holds no such filing for it, and no other consolidated public financial statement for MCC US was located in this pass. 3

A Century Grown From Famine Relief in Southern Russia

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Mennonite Central Committee traces its founding to a famine, not to an institution built in advance to prevent one. In late July 1920, representatives of several Mennonite Relief Commissions met at Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart, Indiana, and formed a provisional committee to answer reports of famine among Mennonite communities in southern Russia, territory that is now Ukraine, where the chaos following the Russian Revolution and the Russian Civil War had left people starving. The provisional body held its first official meeting two months later, on 27 September 1920, in Chicago, and the organization it created went on to formalize its structure, incorporating in Pennsylvania in 1937.

What began as a single-purpose famine response has run continuously for more than a century since, headquartered today in Akron, Pennsylvania, and sponsored in the United States by Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish church bodies. Its stated purpose, sharing God's love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice, has stayed broadly the same even as the geography of its work expanded from one famine-stricken region to relief, development and peace programs carried out in dozens of countries worldwide.

What an Audited Statement Leaves Out by Design

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Mennonite Central Committee's most recent audited consolidated financial statements report total revenue of 48,321,980 US dollars and total expenses of 48,800,038 US dollars for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2025, with total net assets of 85,619,932 US dollars at year end. Read carefully, the statement is narrower than its headline figure suggests: it covers Mennonite Central Committee US and Subsidiaries, meaning the American national office, its four regional entities, and their share of MCC's joint international program with MCC Canada. It explicitly excludes MCC Canada's own separate operations, a scope limit the auditors state plainly rather than leaving a reader to infer it.

That exclusion is not an oversight, it is a description of how the organization is actually built. MCC operates today as a binational partnership, jointly run by Mennonite Central Committee US and Mennonite Central Committee Canada under a shared covenant, so that no single audited statement filed in either country can capture the whole of it. A reader who wants the combined binational total has to look past any one nation's own books, since the structure that lets MCC draw on Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish congregations on both sides of the border is the same structure that keeps its financial reporting split in two.
