Antyeshti, literally the last sacrifice, is the cremation rite performed for the body soon after death, treated in Hindu tradition as one of the samskaras marking the end of earthly life. Shraddha is the later commemorative rite performed on death anniversaries and during the Pitru Paksha fortnight to honor the pitrs, the ancestors of the paternal and maternal lines, believed to bring peace to them in the afterlife. Tarpana is the accompanying Vedic libation offering of water and sesame performed to satisfy ancestors and deities as part of the same ancestral observance. These three rites are linked stages of one funerary and ancestral tradition, distinct from a single generic death custom by their fixed place in the Hindu calendar and their own named liturgical form.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonCultural OriginWell-attestedVedic / Indian 1Browse ByAll Hindu Funerary and Ancestral RitesHindu Funerary and Ancestral Rites3 entriesHindu Funerary and Ancestral RitesFilter Results3 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll-1000 (2)-800 (1)FrequencyAllAnnual (1)Daily (1)Once, or at a turning point in a life (1)Life Stage MarkedAllDeath and the disposal of the body (1)Mourning after the funeral (1)ObligationAllObligatory (2)Obligatory on those who meet its conditions (1)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (3)Social FormAllPerformed alone (1)Performed by a gathered group (2)Practice StatusAllLiving tradition, practised today (1)PractitionerAllHouseholders, those living in the world (3)Native To RegionAllIndian Subcontinent (3)Originated InAllIndian Subcontinent (3)Originates In LanguageAllSanskrit (1)Kind of ritualAllHindu Funerary and Ancestral Rites (3)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 3AntyeshtiFunerary Rituals6 linksShraddhaFunerary Rituals7 linksTarpanaFunerary Rituals6 linksSources1.
