Compositions written for the dead rather than for the living: instructions, spells and declarations meant to accompany a person through what follows death. The Pyramid Texts and the Egyptian Book of the Dead are the best known. They are grouped apart from scripture because their audience and their occasion of use are different, whatever standing the tradition that produced them gives them.
