The texts recovered chiefly from the Nag Hammadi library, whose accounts of Jesus and of the origin of the world differ from those the emerging Christian canon accepted. They are grouped by that shared origin and outlook rather than by a single doctrine, since the writings disagree with one another as sharply as they disagree with the canon that excluded them.
