Hecate Chiaramonti (Vatican Museums, Inv. 1922)

Greco-Roman Art

A Roman marble sculpture of Hecate in her triple-bodied form, a copy after a Hellenistic original, held by the Museo Chiaramonti in the Vatican Museums under inventory Inv. 1922. The three linked female figures, standing back to back around a central column, are a canonical depiction of the goddess in her three-formed aspect, associated with crossroads and boundaries where a triple image could face three directions at once. It is one of the most reproduced surviving images of Hecate from antiquity.
