Virgo

Greek and Roman Sky

Virgo is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Virginis, its standard abbreviation is Vir, it is traditionally shown as the Maiden. It belongs to the Zodiac family of constellations and lies in the third quadrant of the southern hemisphere. The constellation covers about 1294 square degrees of sky, ranking 2nd in size among the 88. Its brightest star is Spica (α Vir) at apparent magnitude 0.98. It borders Boötes, Coma Berenices, Leo, Crater, Corvus, Hydra, Libra and Serpens Caput. In this atlas the entity is the shared sky reference for astronomical objects catalogued by constellation, so every star, nebula or galaxy located within Virgo resolves to one identity.
