Leo is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Its genitive form is Leonis, its standard abbreviation is Leo, it is traditionally shown as the Lion. It belongs to the Zodiac family of constellations and lies in the second quadrant of the northern hemisphere. The constellation covers about 947 square degrees of sky, ranking 12th in size among the 88. Its brightest star is Regulus (α Leo) at apparent magnitude 1.35. It borders Ursa Major, Leo Minor, Lynx, Cancer, Hydra, Sextans, Crater, Virgo and Coma Berenices.
