Haiti Submits the Trace Veve Craft Tradition to UNESCO for Heritage Recognition

Haitian Vodou
Origin from 2026

On 26 March 2026, Haiti's Ministry of Culture and Communication announced the submission to UNESCO of a nomination file for the Savoir Faire du Trace Veve d'Haiti, the country's traditional practice of tracing veve, the symbolic ground drawings that open Vodou ceremonies, seeking inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The filing, made jointly with Haiti's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, its Permanent Delegation to UNESCO and its National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, described the practice as ancestral graphic knowledge transmitted across generations, first entered on Haiti's own National Registry of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. It followed, by nine days, a separate joint Haiti and Benin nomination already on this map for the broader living arts and social practices of Vodou, making this the second and more narrowly focused of two Vodou related submissions Haiti pursued in the same UNESCO cycle.

Established marks the Haitian government's own pursuit of international heritage recognition for a named graphic art form, not any description of how veve are drawn or used within a ceremony, which this fact does not give, and not UNESCO's own decision, which under its ordinary cycle remains pending.

Filed nine days after this map's existing citation of the joint Haiti and Benin nomination for Vodou's living arts and social practices, this fact records a second, separately submitted and more narrowly scoped Haitian filing, for the veve graphic tradition alone, pursued through the Ministry of Culture and Communication rather than the Bureau National d'Ethnologie.
