Standing Surya (National Museum, New Delhi, 50.178, from Konark)

Hindu Art

A khondolite stone sculpture of the sun god Surya from the Konark Sun Temple, Eastern Ganga dynasty, Orissa, dated 1200 to 1300 CE, held by the National Museum, New Delhi, accession 50.178. Surya stands holding a full blown lotus in each hand, riding a chariot drawn by seven galloping horses and driven by his charioteer Aruna, flanked by the attendants Danda and Pingala and his consorts Chhaya and Suvarchasa, the whole composition set beneath a decorative arch. The sculpture reflects the fully Indianized form of Surya's iconography that developed after the Gupta period, in place of the earlier Persian influenced images that showed the god in foreign dress with only four horses.
