Hindu Art

An opaque watercolor painting on paper from the Pahari Hills, Guler, Himachal Pradesh, India, illustrating a battle scene from the Devi Mahatmya, the Hindu text celebrating the goddess Durga's victory over demonic armies. Durga, mounted on her lion, is placed centrally at left; below her the emaciated Chamunda advances; around them fly and ride the Matrikas, the female manifestations of the Hindu pantheon.
