Sri Yukteswar Giri

Sri Yukteswar Giri (1855-1936), born Priya Nath Karar in Serampore, Bengal, was an Indian yogi and spiritual teacher in the Kriya Yoga tradition, best known today as the guru of Paramahansa Yogananda. He established ashrams in Serampore and in Puri, trained disciples including Swami Satyananda Giri and Swami Hariharananda Giri, and worked as an educator who helped develop school curricula and promoted women education. In 1894 he published The Holy Science, a book arguing for an underlying unity across religious traditions. He also reinterpreted the Hindu doctrine of cosmic ages, arguing that the Earth had already progressed beyond the Kali Yuga into the more advanced Dvapara Yuga, and proposed that the precession of the equinoxes was driven by the motion of the sun around a companion star.
