Al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi, born around 594 as a first cousin and brother-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, was an early convert to Islam and one of its most accomplished military commanders. He fought at the Battle of Badr in 624 and took part in nearly every early Muslim battle and expedition, earning from Muhammad the title Disciple of the Messenger of God for his conduct at the Battle of the Trench. After the death of Muhammad he commanded forces in the Ridda Wars and the conquests of Egypt, the Levant, Persia, Sudan and Tripolitania, and he later served as chief advisor to the council that elected the caliph Uthman. He broke with the caliph Ali after the assassination of Uthman and was killed in December 656 while praying, in the aftermath of the Battle of the Camel. Sunni tradition holds that he was promised paradise, while Shia tradition views him negatively.
