Clement of Rome

Church Fathers and Mothers

Clement of Rome, also known as Pope Clement I, was the Bishop of Rome in the late first century and is considered the first of the Apostolic Fathers of the Church. Little is known about his life. Tertullian claimed that Peter ordained him, and Eusebius mentioned him as the third bishop of Rome and a co-laborer of Paul, while Irenaeus described him as the successor to Anacletus and a personal acquaintance of the Apostles. He probably died in exile around the year 100 and may have been martyred, and later apocryphal stories say that Emperor Trajan imprisoned him and that he was executed by being tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea.
