Umaswati

Hindu, Jain & Yogic Teachers

Vacaka Umasvati, the Jain scholar who wrote the Tattvartha Sutra, was an Indian scholar who lived possibly between the 2nd and 5th centuries CE and is known for foundational writings on Jainism. He is the author of the Tattvartha Sutra, also called the Tattvarthadhigama Sutra, the first Sanskrit text on Jaina philosophy and the earliest surviving comprehensive Jaina philosophical work accepted as authoritative by all four Jaina traditions. Both the Digambara and Svetambara sects claim him, though several Jaina scholars consider him a Svetambara ascetic, and he is also called Nagaravachka. His text holds in Jainism a place comparable to the Vedanta Sutras and Yogasutras in Hinduism.
