Home›Historical Figures›Nationality›GermanyBrowse ByGermanyThis page groups historical figures by nationality, the country or people they are identified with. Wikipedia defines nationality as "the legal status of belonging to a particular nation," though for figures who lived before modern states existed the atlas records the closest historical equivalent. Browsing this way lets a visitor see every notable figure from one country or region gathered together.FactsLearn MoreGermanyConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStructureStructureWell-attestedDocumented individuals whose work bore on the traditions the atlas covers, each given a lifespan, a field and a tradition. Much of the literature ascribed to figures in this field is pseudepigraphic, credited to a prestigious ancient name rather than written by one, so an attributed author here is not always the writer. 1OriginsWhose Classification This IsWell-attestedMost of the figures gathered here are studied under the heading "Western esotericism", which is itself a modern academic construction rather than a description the currents involved used of themselves. 1Learn MoreReal people who shaped the traditions This category holds actual historical persons whose work bore on the traditions in the atlas: philosophers, astrologers, alchemists, mystics, theologians, scholars and occultists. Unlike the gods and legendary characters, these are people who can be dated and, in most cases, documented, and the entries give a lifespan, a field and the tradition each worked in or influenced. The range runs from ancient philosophers and astronomers through medieval alchemists and Kabbalists to the founders of modern occultism, and includes figures central to the esoteric currents the atlas traces even where mainstream history treats them as marginal.Person, Persona and Attribution Two problems recur in this material and the atlas addresses both. First, influential esoteric writing is often pseudonymous or misattributed, credited to a prestigious ancient name; the entries separate the real author, where known, from the legendary one. Second, some figures accreted so much legend that the person is hard to see behind the persona, and the entries distinguish the documented life from the later tradition. Some individuals are dual-modelled (a historical figure here and, in their own tradition, a founder or saint elsewhere in the atlas), and the pages are kept complementary rather than duplicated.GermanyFilter Results50 entriesGenderAllFemale (4)Male (46)TraditionAllChristianity (25)Judaism (3)Secular Humanism (1)HistoricityAllHistorically attested (46)EraAll1013 to 1054 (1)1066 to 1081 (1)1430 to 1505 (1)1455 to 1522 (1)1462 to 1516 (1)1486 to 1535 (1)1494 to 1555 (1)1499 to 1543 (1)1499 to 1552 (1)1560 to 1605 (1)1568 to 1622 (1)1571 to 1630 (1)1572 to 1625 (1)1575 to 1624 (1)1586 to 1654 (1)1591 to 1635 (1)1602 to 1680 (1)1646 to 1716 (1)1685 to 1750 (1)1724 to 1804 (1)1734 to 1815 (1)1770 to 1831 (1)1771 to 1799 (1)1801 to 1875 (1)1822 to 1889 (1)1838 to 1920 (1)1851 to 1930 (1)1851 to 1933 (1)1859 to 1938 (1)1869 to 1937 (1)1873 to 1930 (1)1881 to 1962 (1)1884 to 1976 (1)1897 to 1982 (1)1902 to 1944 (1)1923 to 1997 (1)1928 to 2011 (1)1931 to 2015 (1)In GroupAllChristian Reform and Anabaptist Founders (6)Revered InAllBuddhism (1)Christianity (19)Judaism (3)Manner Of DeathAllDied of natural causes (13)Executed (2)Martyred (1)Test ResultAllDebunked (2)Veneration StatusAllHistorically Significant but Not Venerated (38)Officially Recognized or Venerated (8)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 50Adam of BremenGermanyAdolf von HarnackGermanyAlbrecht RitschlGermanyAndreas KarlstadtGermanyÁrpád von NahodylGermanyAthanasius KircherGermanyAyya KhemaGermanyBalthasar HubmaierGermanyCaspar SchwenckfeldGermanyEdmund HusserlGermanyFelix AdlerGermanyFranz Anton MesmerGermanyFriedrich Spee von LangenfeldGermanyGeorg Wilhelm Friedrich HegelGermanyGeorgius AgricolaGermanyGerhard TersteegenGermanyGershom ScholemGermanyGertrude the GreatGermanyGottfried Wilhelm LeibnizGermanyHans DenckGermanyHeinrich Cornelius AgrippaGermanyHeinrich KhunrathGermanyHeinrich KramerGermanyHelmut SchmidtGermanyHermann of ReichenauGermanyHugh of Saint VictorGermanyImmanuel KantGermanyJacob BoehmeGermanyJakob Wilhelm HauerGermanyJohann BayerGermanyJohann Kaspar HechtelGermanyJohann Sebastian BachGermanyJohann Valentin AndreaeGermanyJohannes KeplerGermanyJohannes ReuchlinGermanyJohannes TrithemiusGermanyKarl E.
