Wikipedia notes that in ancient Rome "public business was suspended for the performance of religious rites on the feriae." Browsing by observance type lets a visitor compare how differently two holidays are actually kept.FactsLearn MoreVeneration of a deity or holy figureSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedDays a tradition's calendar sets apart - feasts, fasts, festivals, high holy days and lesser observances - each reckoned in the calendar of the tradition that keeps it. Those calendars are lunar, lunisolar, sidereal-solar or tropical-solar and none is the civil Gregorian year, so a date fixed in its own reckoning moves against the civil calendar year by year. 1Learn MoreThe Festivals and Holy Days This category holds the festivals and holy days of the religious calendars: fixed and movable feasts, fasts, new years, solstice and equinox observances, and commemorations of events and figures. Each entry records the tradition, the calendar by which the date is reckoned, and what the day marks. Holy days give a religion its year, a repeating cycle of remembrance and renewal that structures communal life. Some commemorate an event held to be historical or mythic; others mark a turn of the season or the calendar; others are set aside for fasting, penitence or joy.Reckoning the Date Because traditions use different calendars, the same festival can fall on different dates from year to year, and movable feasts (Easter, the Islamic festivals, the Hindu festivals set by lunar dates), shift against the civil calendar in ways the entries explain. The reckoning of dates is itself part of a festival's character, tying it to the calendars gathered elsewhere in the atlas. The holidays group by kind (feasts, fasts, festivals, high holy days and observances), so a reader can compare, for instance, the major fasts of several traditions together.Veneration of a deity or holy figureFilter Results40 entriesTraditionAllArmenian Apostolic Church (1)Church of Cyprus (1)Church of England (1)Church of Greece (1)Eastern Orthodoxy (2)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (1)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (1)Georgian Orthodox Church (1)Greek Orthodox Church (1)Lutheranism (1)Maronite Church (2)Old Believers (1)Roman Catholicism (9)Romanian Orthodox Church (1)Russian Orthodox Church (1)Serbian Orthodox Church (2)Shaivism (1)Shaktism (2)Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (1)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (1)Vaishnavism (1)Calendar SystemAllAncient Greek civic calendar (Attic) (1)Aztec solar year (xiuhpohualli) (2)Chinese lunisolar (1)Gregorian (civil solar) (11)Hindu lunisolar (panchanga) (16)Hindu solar (sidereal, sankranti-based) (2)Julian (Old Calendar) (2)No calendar: set directly by the sky (1)Old Norse and Germanic pagan calendar (2)Roman civil calendar (2)Date TypeAllComputed from another feast (2)Fixed date in its own calendar (35)Set by an astronomical event or computus (1)Set by observation or authority within a window (2)MonthAllAugust (1)December (2)February (1)January (1)July (1)May (1)September (2)Origin EraAll274 (1)335 (1)450 (2)1423 (1)1531 (1)1673 (1)1858 (1)1873 (1)1893 (1)1917 (1)HonoursAllSol Invictus (1)Vesta (1)Place of OriginAllFrance (2)Greece (1)India (15)Italy (2)Japan (1)Mexico (3)Nepal (2)Nigeria (2)Portugal (1)UNESCO StatusAllInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2)Status TodayAllLiving tradition, practised today (25)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 40Ambubachi MelaVeneration of a deity or holy figureChhath PujaVeneration of a deity or holy figureConfucius's BirthdayVeneration of a deity or holy figureDhanterasVeneration of a deity or holy figureDies Natalis Solis InvictiVeneration of a deity or holy figureDisablotVeneration of a deity or holy figureDurga PujaVeneration of a deity or holy figureEsbatVeneration of a deity or holy figureExaltation of the Holy CrossVeneration of a deity or holy figureFeast of the AssumptionVeneration of a deity or holy figureGanesh ChaturthiVeneration of a deity or holy figureGovardhan PujaVeneration of a deity or holy figureGuru PurnimaVeneration of a deity or holy figureHanuman JayantiVeneration of a deity or holy figureKukur TiharVeneration of a deity or holy figureMaha ShivaratriVeneration of a deity or holy figureMichaelmasVeneration of a deity or holy figureNaga PanchamiVeneration of a deity or holy figureNavaratriVeneration of a deity or holy figureOlojo FestivalVeneration of a deity or holy figureOsun-Osogbo FestivalVeneration of a deity or holy figureOur Lady of FatimaVeneration of a deity or holy figureOur Lady of GuadalupeVeneration of a deity or holy figureOur Lady of LourdesVeneration of a deity or holy figureOur Lady of Mount CarmelVeneration of a deity or holy figureOur Lady of SorrowsVeneration of a deity or holy figurePanathenaeaVeneration of a deity or holy figurePanquetzaliztliVeneration of a deity or holy figureRam NavamiVeneration of a deity or holy figureRatha YatraVeneration of a deity or holy figureShogatsu (New Year)Veneration of a deity or holy figureSlavaVeneration of a deity or holy figureThaipusamVeneration of a deity or holy figureThe Sacred Heart of JesusVeneration of a deity or holy figureThe Triumph of OrthodoxyVeneration of a deity or holy figureToxcatlVeneration of a deity or holy figureVaikuntha EkadashiVeneration of a deity or holy figureVasant PanchamiVeneration of a deity or holy figureVestaliaVeneration of a deity or holy figureVetrnaetr (Winter Nights)Veneration of a deity or holy figureSources1.
