Browsing by UNESCO status lets a visitor find every holiday carrying that international recognition.FactsLearn MoreInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanitySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedDays a tradition's calendar sets apart - feasts, fasts, festivals, high holy days and lesser observances - each reckoned in the calendar of the tradition that keeps it. Those calendars are lunar, lunisolar, sidereal-solar or tropical-solar and none is the civil Gregorian year, so a date fixed in its own reckoning moves against the civil calendar year by year. 1Learn MoreThe Festivals and Holy Days This category holds the festivals and holy days of the religious calendars: fixed and movable feasts, fasts, new years, solstice and equinox observances, and commemorations of events and figures. Each entry records the tradition, the calendar by which the date is reckoned, and what the day marks. Holy days give a religion its year, a repeating cycle of remembrance and renewal that structures communal life. Some commemorate an event held to be historical or mythic; others mark a turn of the season or the calendar; others are set aside for fasting, penitence or joy.Reckoning the Date Because traditions use different calendars, the same festival can fall on different dates from year to year, and movable feasts (Easter, the Islamic festivals, the Hindu festivals set by lunar dates), shift against the civil calendar in ways the entries explain. The reckoning of dates is itself part of a festival's character, tying it to the calendars gathered elsewhere in the atlas. The holidays group by kind (feasts, fasts, festivals, high holy days and observances), so a reader can compare, for instance, the major fasts of several traditions together.Inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityFilter Results12 entriesTraditionAllEritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Irani Zoroastrianism (1)Oriental Orthodoxy (1)Parsi Zoroastrianism (1)Roman Catholicism (1)Serbian Orthodox Church (1)Shaktism (1)Vaishnavism (1)Calendar SystemAllBadi (Bahai) (1)Chinese lunisolar (2)Gregorian (civil solar) (2)Hindu lunisolar (panchanga) (3)Hindu solar (sidereal, sankranti-based) (1)Julian (Old Calendar) (2)Solar Hijri / Iranian (solar) (1)Zoroastrian (Shahanshahi / Qadimi / Fasli) (1)Date TypeAllComputed from another feast (1)Fixed date in its own calendar (8)Set by an astronomical event or computus (2)Observance TypeAllAlmsgiving / offering (1)Commemoration of a person or event (3)Feast / celebration (4)Kinship or family bond (1)Memorial of the dead (1)New year (3)Pilgrimage (2)Procession (2)Purification (1)Seasonal turning point (2)Veneration of a deity or holy figure (2)MonthAllApril (1)January (1)March (1)November (1)Origin EraAll250 BCE (1)104 BCE (1)1520 (1)1700 (1)1848 (1)Place of OriginAllChina (2)Ethiopia (1)India (3)Iran (1)Mexico (1)Peru (1)Thailand (1)Vietnam (1)Status TodayAllLiving tradition, practised today (12)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 12Chinese New YearInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityDia de los MuertosInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityDiwaliInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityDragon Boat FestivalInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityDurga PujaInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityKumbh MelaInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityNowruzInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityPhu Day FestivalInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityQoyllur Rit'iInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanitySlavaInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanitySongkranInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanityTimkatInscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of HumanitySources1.
