Origin Hellenistic: the twelve-place scheme appears with horoscopic astrology from about the first century BCE

The twelve houses divide a birth chart by the daily rotation of the earth rather than by the zodiac, and each covers an area of life: the first the self and body, the seventh partnership, the tenth vocation and standing. The scheme is Hellenistic in origin and is the part of astrology that requires an accurate birth time. Several house systems exist (Placidus, Whole Sign, Equal, Koch and others), which divide the space differently and can place the same planet in different houses.

The twelve houses of the chart

The twelve houses divide a birth chart by the daily rotation of the earth rather than by the zodiac, and each governs an area of life: the first house the self and body, the fourth the home and roots, the seventh partnership and open enemies, the tenth vocation and standing, and so on around the wheel. A planet's meaning in a chart depends heavily on which house it falls in.

The house scheme is Hellenistic in origin and is tied to the horizon and meridian of the moment and place of birth, which is why an accurate time and location matter so much more for the houses than for the signs.

Systems of Division

Astrologers divide the houses by several competing methods (whole-sign, equal, Placidus, Regiomontanus and others), which place the boundaries differently and can put a planet in different houses in the same chart. The choice of house system is a live matter in the tradition, and the atlas notes the main systems rather than assuming one.

The entries give each house its sphere of life, its natural sign and planet, and its place in the chart. The houses work together with the signs, planets and aspects treated in their own categories.
