Linguistics

Origin from 1916

Linguistics is the scientific study of language and its structure, given its modern founding text when Ferdinand de Saussure's students published his Course in General Linguistics from his lecture notes in 1916, establishing language as a structured system to be studied on its own terms rather than only through its history. Its philological branch, already named elsewhere in this collection, recovers the original wording behind a tradition's own scripture.

Linguistics: Recovering a Scripture's Original Wording

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Linguistics is the scientific study of language and its structure, its method the systematic analysis of a language's sound, structure, meaning and use as a coherent system in its own right. The field's modern founding text appeared in 1916, when Ferdinand de Saussure's students published his Course in General Linguistics from his lecture notes, establishing language as a structured system to be studied for itself rather than only through its history.

For an atlas of religion and belief, linguistics' philological branch, already named elsewhere in this collection, recovers the original wording behind a tradition's own scripture, and the parent field's systematic method for reading a language's sound and structure is what makes that recovery possible in the first place. A scripture's earliest wording, a liturgy's original pronunciation or a sacred name's true origin are each linguistic questions before they are theological ones.

That priority is why the field matters here specifically. Whatever a scripture or a liturgy is later taken to mean, its actual words are a linguistic object first, and linguistics is the discipline equipped to establish what those words originally were and how they have changed since.
