Abu Ismail Abdullah al-Harawi al-Ansari, known as Abdullah Ansari of Herat and also called Pir-i Herat, meaning Sage of Herat, lived from 1006 to 1089 in Herat in the Ghaznavid Empire, in what is now Afghanistan. He was a Sufi saint, a commentator on the Quran, a scholar of the Hanbali school of Islamic law, a traditionalist and polemicist, and a spiritual master known for his oratory and poetic talent in Persian.
