Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi, who lived from 5 October 1274 to 3 February 1348, was a Syrian Sunni Muslim historian, biographer and hadith scholar. He wrote major biographical and historical works, including Siyar Alam al-Nubala and Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, and the historical chronicle Tarikh al-Islam. His best known teachers and scholarly associates included al-Mizzi, al-Birzali, and Ibn Taymiyya.
