Temple or temple complex

This page groups sacred sites by their physical type. Wikipedia lists "sacred groves... sacred mountains, sacred trees, sacred waters, tombs" among the recognized types of sacred place. Browsing by site type lets a visitor compare a sacred mountain against a sacred spring or a venerated tomb.

What Defines This Grouping
Hilltop temple-cities and pilgrimage hills at which the tirthankaras are venerated, most of them held to be the place where a tirthankara attained liberation. The Jain word for such a place, tirtha, is the same crossing-place term Hinduism uses; several hills are claimed by both traditions, and one is claimed by an Adivasi community under its own name as well. 2

The sacred sites of Jainism

This group holds the sacred sites of Jainism, the temple-cities and holy hills of India where the tirthankaras, the great ford-makers of the tradition, are venerated. Jain sacred places are noted for their intricately carved temples and their hilltop pilgrimage complexes.

The browser will find the Jain temples and pilgrimage hills the atlas gathers. The entries describe each site's association with the tirthankaras and its place in Jain devotion.
