Church Slavonic is a Slavic language of the South Slavic sub-branch, kept for worship by Eastern Christian churches rather than spoken at home. It descends from Old Church Slavonic, the ninth and tenth century language of the first Slavic translations of scripture and liturgy from Koine Greek, and it branched into regional varieties called recensions, among them Serbian, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Croatian and Czech. In its conservative form, standardised in the eighteenth century, it is used in Eastern Orthodox services in Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and other countries, and also by the Old Believers and by some Greek Catholic churches. In this atlas the general entry stands for denominations that name Church Slavonic without a recension; the Russian recension and Old Church Slavonic have their own entries.
