Taos Pueblo and Its Sacred Blue Lake

Illustrated and Graphic Work

A book of text and historic photographs by Marcia Keegan, first published in 1991 with a foreword by former US Interior Secretary Stewart L. Udall, documenting Taos Pueblo's roughly sixty year struggle to recover Blue Lake, a sacred site in the mountains above the pueblo that the United States had folded into a national forest in 1906, and the return of 48,000 acres including the lake in 1970. All royalties from the book's sale are donated to the Oo-oonah Children's Art Center of Taos Pueblo, an arrangement the publisher's own catalog names. The book documents the land dispute and its 1970 resolution rather than describing Blue Lake's own ceremonial use.

Religious Subject MatterSourced to the subject's own account
Blue Lake, the site Taos Pueblo holds most sacred, and the sixty-year legal and political struggle that returned it to the pueblo in 1970. The book names Blue Lake's religious standing without describing what is done there ceremonially. 2
Scholarly Reception
Recommended for public library collections; still in print in a fortieth-anniversary edition. Its foreword author Stewart L. Udall, who as US Interior Secretary was involved in federal land policy toward the pueblo, called the underlying story a triumph of the human spirit deserving endless retelling. 1
