The gods of the Moche civilization, which flourished on the north coast of Peru from roughly the first to the eighth century CE and is known chiefly through its ceramics, metalwork and monumental adobe temple platforms rather than through any surviving written record. Moche religious iconography centers on a fanged, feline-associated supreme figure modern scholarship calls the Decapitator, alongside a moon deity credited with control over the seasons and storms on which the civilization's irrigated agriculture depended.
